What is the Homestead Tax Exemption:
Qualified residents may receive an exemption that reduces the taxable value of their property up to $50,000.
Criteria for qualified residents:
Be a Florida resident: own and occupy the property as your permanent resident on January 1st of the year in which you wish to claim the exemption. For example, Living in the property from January 1st 2018-January 1st of 2019 to be able to claim on 2018 taxes, which will be filed in Spring of 2019.
Applications must be submitted by March 1st of the year in which you are claiming the exemption. For example, March 1st, 2019 applications are for 2019 taxes which will be completed in Spring of 2020.
Other Important Information:
Homestead exemption is not Transferable however, you do not have to apply for the Homestead exemption every year if your permanent address is the same.
